Being a parent can be a challenging, tasking, exciting and rewarding experience. Every parent who is blessed with the responsibility of taking care and providing for a child should recognize the huge gift and responsibility placed on them. As a parent, we should thus be interested in how to succeed in parenting happy and healthy children. This article highlights 3 basic tips for successful parenting.
**Listen, listen and listen**
The traditional family role of many cultures of the world places the parent as the controlling authority. A lot of parents are thus attuned to giving instructions and advice and having the child listen and obey. For your child to be happy and to feel part of the family unit, he or she has to be allowed to air their views, make their input and reveal their feelings. Parents should thus not always be too quick to give commands and advice.
As the child grows older, the parent needs to listen to the child and allow them to express themselves. There are times when all a child needs to do is let out his frustration or pent out their emotions in words. That will not be the best time to offer advice. It would be better for the parent to just give a listening ear and listen to the child. This helps the child feel loved and part of the family. It also helps the parent better understand the child.
**Believe and show you child that he/she is unique**
The world environment encourages competition in almost every field. Parents feel that to inspire their children to excel, they would need to spur healthy completion between their child and others. Many parents are thus culprits of comparing their children to others. It is a common practice to base one's success on the set benchmark of other people's achievements. In parlance with this view, parents usually measure their child's achievement based on the achievement of other peopl'’s children.
The truth is however that each child is unique. Each child not only has a unique look, but also has a unique set of abilities, talents and capabilities. Of course, the child's ability can be boosted and increased with proper encouragement, training and direction, but each child still has a unique way of responding to the same encouragement and training. Parents should help their child to believe that they are unique and can also get better. Encourage a child to improve on his or her grades and not to get compared with another child's achievement. Comparing the child with a more successful child places undue pressure on them and also can make them feel as being not good enough.
**Spend time with your child**
The experience you spend with your children is the best gift you can give your children and yourself. Watching your child grow and being a part of that growth is very important in making your child feel loved, secured and wanted. Do not leave your parenting tasks to teachers, nannies and baby sitters as these set of people are there to help and not to take over your parenting role.
