Parents usually only think of a child's ability to write, read and solve math as the necessary skills that kids need to succeed academically. In truth, one very important skill that your child needs to learn from a young age is how to be creative. Creativity will not only help the child to excel academically, but will also help them with everyday issues.
**What is creativity?**
Creativity defines a person's ability to think outside the box around new ideas. A creative child is one that is curious, seeks answers and has a healthy taste for adventure. Remember that children have the learning ability comparable to sponges. At that age they find it easy to learn and retain new things they are exposed to. A curious child will thus seek to learn and know more. There are several things parents can do to stimulate the creative ability of their children.
**Tips for Boosting creativity**
Encourage the child by showing that you believe in him. A confident child is more likely to explore and try out new things. Giving the child arts and craft tools is another great way to encourage the use of his hands and minds. Encourage any inclination towards an art or a skill that the child may show. Encourage him with necessary tools and words of encouragement.
Stimulating a child's imagination is a great way to spark up the child's creativity. Telling them stories will help the child imagine and learn to think of new ideas. Parents should thus read as much stories to their children as possible. Encourage them to read stories on their own and also write their own stories.
Children can begin playing pretend games when they reach 18 months. Using used cartoons to substitute as a motor car, pretending to cook, playing mother with toy dolls or doing dress ups are pretend games that are good for stimulating the child's ability to imagine and be creative. If possible, the parents should join in and play these games with their children from time to time as this will bolster the child ability and self confidence.
There are still a lot of activities that you can encourage your child to do and even do with them to improve their creative abilities. Children love music and you can encourage your kids to take interest in playing one musical instrument from a young age. Learning to sing songs will help improve the child's creative and artistic abilities along with his vocab. Cooking, playing with puzzles and interactive educational games will help the child learn how to think and develop problem resolving skills.
A child must be given space, time and encouragement to help them develop their creative side that is within them. Instead of giving the child a picture to color, which restricts his freedom to create something new, why not give him a blank sheet to draw his own picture? Do not be quick to criticize the kid's effort to be creative, encourage their efforts, nurture it and give it free reign to grow.
