Parents are tasked to ensure the safety and well-being of their children. However, most victims of child abuse fall under the radar because their parents do not know how to detect the occurrence of abuse. Recognizing the signs that a child might be abused by the adults around him can be difficult, and is often attributed to "difficult behavior." Common signs among victims of child abuse can include nervousness around adults (including the child's parents), aggression toward adults or the child's peers, sudden and dramatic changes in the child's personality and usual activities, frequently unexplained bruises or injuries, low self-esteem, and an inability to concentrate on tasks for extended periods. Of course, the nature of each case of abuse can be different from child to child, so parents must keep a vigilant eye on their children.

A child who used to do very well in school and is currently struggling with schoolwork should be a cause for concern. Suspicion - as though the child is always expecting something bad to happen to him - can also be a red flag for child abuse. But reporting child abuse is not the sole responsibility of the child's parents - the other adults (including teachers, relatives, and neighbors) around the child should also share that responsibility. Parents who show little concern for their children can also be suspected of child abuse. Verbal abuse is a form of child abuse as well - words from a trusted adult can mean so much to a child, and negative criticism can definitely wound a child's psyche and self-esteem.

A responsible adult should always look out for the welfare of the children around him or her. While physical and sexual abuse seems to be the immediate threat to today's children, neglect and emotional maltreatment are also big issues that should be addressed. With awareness of the different types of child abuse, adults can make the world a safer place for children to grow up in.
